Two former Bearkats sign with Miami
The NFL free agency period is in full swing, resulting in a pair for former Bearkat football players teaming up again, this time as professionals in Miami.
In the last week, Josh McCown and Keith Davis inked free agent deals to play with the Miami Dolphins. The Dolphins on Tuesday signed safety Davis to a two-year contract worth $3.5 million. McCown singed earlier this month with the Dolphins for two years and $6.5 million.
McCown was a 3rd round pick in 2002 by the Arizona Cardinals. An undrafted free agent in 2002, Davis excelled on special teams for the Dallas Cowboys last season.
Davis has ties to former Dallas coach Bill Parcells - the Dolphins' head of operations - and incoming first-year coach Tony Sparano. Davis, 29, had his best season in 2005, when he started 15 games and finished with a career-high 68 tackles with Dallas.
He has made just seven starts the past two seasons but registered a team-leading 69 tackles on special teams over the past four campaigns.
"The team is a blend of young and experienced players that will eagerly be looking to play hard-nosed, smart and game-winning football," Davis said. "I intend to be a value-added role player to assist coach Sparano's rebuilding plan and to provide both leadership in the secondary, on special teams and in the locker room."
McCown started nine games with the Raiders in 2007, completing 111-of-190 passes for 1,151 yards with 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. In his six year career, McCown has completed 609-of-1,052 passes for 6,582 yards with 35 touchdowns and 40 picks in 44 games (31 starts) with Oakland, Detroit and Arizona.
Both McCown and Davis played on the Bearkats' 2001 Southland Conference championship team that advanced to the quarterfinals of the I-AA playoffs. In his one season with the Kats, McCown passed for 3,481 yards, which currently stands as the second best single-season mark in school history (Dustin Long, 4,588 in 2004). He threw for 32 touchdowns that year, while guiding the Kats to a 10-3 record. McCown was a first-team all-SLC selection and earned third team All-American honors. He was also a finalist for the Walter Payton Award.
Davis played four years for the Bearkats finishing his career fourth on the all-time tackle list with 339 career stops. He recovered six fumbles as a Kat and also blocked six kicks (5 punts, 1 FG). In 2000 he was named Southland Conference Defensive Player of the Year. In 2001 he was an SLC first-team selection and was named as a first-team All-America selection and a finalist for the Buck Buchannan Award.
