TSU men's basketball team improving; Bearkats football players honored
The last two months have been torture for the Texas Southern men's basketball team, but it appears that the Tigers are finally starting to figure things out.
TSU knocked off Southwestern Athletic Conference rival Southern University 65-54 on Monday night at HP&E Arena for its second straight victory. The Tigers (3-12) are off to a 2-0 start in the SWAC after snapping a 12-game losing streak.
Junior guard Sollie Norwood, who came up big in TSU's 81-75 win over Alcorn State on Saturday, led the charge with game-highs of 22 points, 10 rebounds, three assists and three steals. Junior guard Matthew Miller tacked on 17 points and five rebounds.
The Tigers have played well lately. Granted, TSU's last two games have come against components with a combined record of 5-23, but wins are wins and the Tigers will willingly take them.
TSU's horrendous start to the season is in the past, and no longer matters. Now the real fun begins.
The Tigers have 16 SWAC contests remaining, starting with a match against rival Prairie View A&M at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at HP&E Arena. They'll have to play even better down the stretch to earn one of the eight berths for the SWAC's postseason tournament to decide the recipient of the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
But let's not get ahead of ourselves. There's plenty of basketball left to be played, and TSU coach Robert Moreland is content to take it slow.
"You have to win at home in order to gain a berth in the (SWAC tournament)," said Moreland, who captured his 402nd win on Monday. "We have one more game here (against Prairie View on Saturday night) before we go on the road.
"We'll cherish this win before we get back to work and focus on Prairie View."

Sam Houston State had four players who received All-American honors from the Sports Network. Senior tight end Blake Martin was named to the Sports Network's third team. Senior offensive lineman Brandon Hale, senior defensive back Bryan Richmond and junior defensive end Chris Brown were tabbed for honorable mention.
This is the third national postseason honor for Martin, who was also named to the Associated Press' Football Championship Subdivision All-America first team and was one of two tight ends selected for the College Sporting News Fabulous 50 FCS team.
