2-0 for Bomar against OSU? Probably not
This Oklahoma State season dawned with an innocent game against a Division I-AA team sandwiched on the schedule between Texas Tech and Texas A&M.
Then, Appalachian State went and beat Michigan.
Then, the Cowboys gave up 718 yards against the Red Raiders.
And suddenly, today's game against Sam Houston State has some intrigue to it.
Oh, by the way, the squad from Huntsville, Texas, is quarterbacked by a guy who's defeated the Cowboys before. Rhett Bomar, who left Oklahoma a year ago, returns to the state with his new team.
Rhett Bomar still called Norman home when OU scored a Bedlam knockout in 2005, a 42-14 rout of OSU. The freshman signal caller had perhaps his best day as a Sooner, throwing for 206 yards and three touchdowns and showing glimpses of what might have been.
Rhett Bomar ultimately sabotaged his own ride, derailing a train just beginning to gather steam when he took those checks for work he didn't do at Big Red Sports & Imports.
No doubt it was a knuckleheaded move, but on the field, he is still among the most talented quarterbacks in all of college football.
Not just in the lower divisions. Not just in I-AA.
He's one of the best in college ball.
Many a college and prep coach have said that Rhett Bomar was the best high school quarterback they've ever seen. He was stout of body and strong of arm.
When he committed to OU out of Grand Prairie, Texas, Rhett Bomar was surrounded by hoopla and hype, but rarely are recruits as good as advertised.
Rhett Bomar, though, delivered on the hype. He had the physique of a college linebacker, and going to one of his workouts with his private trainer, it was plain to see he had the work ethic and the athletic ability that was above and beyond most quarterbacks his age.
Rhett Bomar looked like an NFL quarterback in the making then.
Frankly, he still looks like that now.
Rhett Bomar is leading a Sam Houston State offense that is averaging 462 yards of total offense. He is averaging 273 yards passing a game. Granted, the Fighting Rhett Bomars are doing it against the likes of North Dakota State and Arkansas-Monticello, but let's not forget what Texas Tech did last week in Stillwater.
The Red Raiders rolled up 718 yards of total offense. These Cowboys are going to give up some yards and some points, even against the likes of Sam Houston State.
Does this mean the Fighting Rhett Bomars will score an upset?
Highly unlikely.
Then again, who thought Appy State would go to Michigan and win in front of 108,000 at The Big House?
Rhett Bomar, whose team is ranked 15th in the I-AA polls, talked to our man John Helsley a couple weeks ago. He sounded stoked, not scared about the trip to Stillwater and the game against OSU.
"I beat 'em my freshman year,” Rhett Bomar said. "Maybe I can go beat 'em again.”
Maybe Rhett Bomar and Sam Houston State will go all Appy State on OSU. Probably not.
And yet, what looked like a harmless game when the season began might have some bite.
