SFA's Long earns Southland award for special teams

FRISCO — SFA junior kicker Cory Long has been named Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week, announced league officials Monday afternoon. It marks the first time in Long's career that he has received the honor.

Long recorded a career-night Saturday in the Lumberjacks' game at No. 4 North Dakota State. Long was a perfect 4-of-4 on field-goal attempts, scoring a career-high 13 points. Long connected on attempts of 20, 46, 27 and 47 yards Saturday night in the Fargo Dome. The 47-yard field goal tied a career long, which he originally set last season.

Long earned honorable mention all-conference honors during a freshman season that saw him score 66 points. He is currently 10th all-time in school history with 155 career points.

Northwestern State sophomore quarterback Germayne Edmond received the award on offense with 333 total yards — 281 passing and 52 rushing — and three touchdowns.

Byran Richmond, a senior defensive back from Sam Houston, was awarded the Defensive Player of the Week award with 15 tackles and two forced fumbles.

Honorable mention performers were Rhett Bomar, Sam Houston; Michael Okoronkwo, Nicholls; and Danny Southall, SFA on offense. On defense were Jarrod Dale, UCA; Mack Dampier, Northwestern State; and Dwayne Jones, Nicholls. For special teams were Michael Capparelli, Sam Houston; Ladarius Webb, Nicholls; and Robert Weeks, Northwestern St.
