Brown outplays Bomar, UCA rolls
The best quarterback in this game wasn't the one who went to Oklahoma.
Nathan Brown threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night to lead Central Arkansas over Sam Houston State 35-14 at Huntsville, Texas. Sam Houston State quarterback Rhett Bomar, dismissed from the team at Oklahoma last year for violating NCAA rules, threw two interceptions.
Central Arkansas (2-3, 1-1 Southland Conference) and Sam Houston State (2-3, 0-1) are in the Football Championship Subdivision, formerly called Division I-AA.
In Division II Saturday, Arkansas Tech lost to Delta State 43-14, Ouachita Baptist lost to North Alabama 40-7, Southern Arkansas lost to Valdosta State 33-21, and Henderson State beat Arkansas-Monticello 41-7. On Thursday night, Harding beat West Georgia 49-31.
Arkansas Baptist lost to Cisco 69-6 in a junior college game Saturday.
Central Arkansas led 21-7 at halftime after scoring two touchdowns in the second quarter. Brown threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Charles Twilley in the period.
Brown finished 28-of-37.
"For the most part we were pretty solid offensively," Bears coach Clint Conque said. "And that was a good football team we beat tonight, a really good offensive team."
Sam Houston State was ranked No. 19 in The Sports Network FCS poll.
Rhett Bomar went 22-of-38 for 241 yards and a third-quarter touchdown that made it 21-14. But Brown answered in the fourth with a 17-yard TD pass to Marquez Branson, and Spencer Hebert added his second 1-yard touchdown run of the game to complete the scoring.
Fourteen different players caught at least one pass for Central Arkansas.
Delta State 43, Arkansas Tech 14
At Cleveland, Miss., Dedrick Wilson threw for a touchdown and ran for two for Delta State.
The Statesmen (5-0, 4-0 Gulf South Conference) also scored on two Arkansas Tech turnovers. Jamarcus Wiggins returned an interception 40 yards for a touchdown, and Jarel Preston recovered a bad snap in the end zone on a punt.
The Wonder Boys (3-3, 1-3) are without quarterback Cole Barthel, out for the season with a knee injury. Carter Hallock and Justin Ray combined to throw for just 73 yards in Barthel's absence.
Delta State is No. 8 in the AFCA Division II poll.
North Alabama 40, Ouachita Baptist 7
At Florence, Ala., A.J. Milwee threw for two touchdowns and Brandenn Picket ran for two to lead the No. 3 Lions (5-0, 4-0 GSC).
Ouachita Baptist (3-3, 1-2) scored first on a 26-yard run by Willie Hopson, but North Alabama evened the score later in the first quarter, then outscored the Tigers 33-0 in the second and third.
Valdosta State 33, Southern Arkansas 21
At Magnolia, Ark., No. 5 Valdosta State (5-0, 3-0 GSC) returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the second half, the second of which squelched a Southern Arkansas rally.
The Muleriders (2-4, 1-3) trailed 27-7 after Shawn Harris returned an interception 86 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. But Southern Arkansas scored two touchdowns in the fourth, on a 1-yard run by Chris Metcalf and a 32-yard pass from Josh SanFilippo to Mario Coleman.
Jamaal Clark sealed the game for Valdosta State when he scored on a 45-yard interception return with 2:05 to play.
Henderson State 41, Arkansas-Monticello 7
At Arkadelphia, Ark., Bernard Palmer ran for 130 yards and a touchdown for the Reddies (4-2, 3-1 GSC).
Arkansas-Monticello (2-4, 1-3) was held to 253 yards of total offense.
Harding 49, West Georgia 31
At Searcy, Ark., David Knighton threw for 401 yards and five touchdowns for the Bisons.
Harding (3-3, 2-2 GSC) scored 47 points in the first three quarters thanks largely to Knighton, who also ran for a touchdown. Kurt Adams was on the receiving end for two of Knighton's TD passes.
Ryan Poole threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns for West Georgia (1-5, 0-3).
Cisco 69, Arkansas Baptist 6
At Cisco, Texas, Arkansas Baptist (0-6) continued to struggle in its first season. Cisco (5-1) is No. 12 in the NJCAA poll.
