College Football: Hicks leads stunning rally over Texas State
SAN MARCOS — With Oklahoma transfer Rhett Bomar taking over at quarterback this season at Sam Houston State, few would have blamed former Bandera standout Brett Hicks if he had walked away from the program.
"I could have graduated, but I made the decision to stay, just because I liked being around the guys," Hicks said. "I knew I probably wouldn't play. I tell you, I never dreamed it would end like this."
Neither did the Texas State Bobcats.
Hicks threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Chris Lucas with 13 seconds remaining, and Taylor Wilkins kicked the extra point to complete a stunning rally, lifting the Bearkats to a 29-28 victory in the teams' regular-season finale.
Trailing 28-10 going into the fourth quarter, the Bearkats (7-4, 5-2 Southland Conference) scored three touchdowns in the final nine minutes.
Hicks, a senior starting his second game this season in place of the injured Rhett Bomar, sent the Bobcats (4-7, 3-4) to a crushing defeat.
"I'm disappointed for the seniors," Texas State coach Brad Wright said. "I'm disappointed for the program. We had ample chances to win the football game, and we didn't do it."
In the first quarter, the Fox Sports Southwest regional telecast was knocked off the air when a generator failed.
When the telecast resumed at the start of the second half, the Bobcats extended a four-point lead to 28-10 with two third-quarter TDs.
But at that point, a crowd of 9,346 at Bobcat Stadium watched as the lead slowly disintegrated. Bearkats running back Chris Poullard scored the first two TDs in the rally on 1-yard runs, the first with 8:41 remaining.
Sam Houston's defense set up the next one less than a minute later when Jerod Brown intercepted a tipped Bradley George pass at the Texas State 5-yard line and returned it to the 1.
Poullard scored on the next play to cut the lead to 28-22. Both times, Sam Houston's 2-point conversions failed.
Hicks engineered the winning drive as the Bearkats drove 80 yards in 12 plays.
On fourth-and-goal from the 5, Hicks found Lucas on a curl to the inside for the game winner.
